Central Redevelopment Area

About the Area

What do these sports have in common: baseball, weight lifting, skateboarding, kick boxing and figure skating? The answer is that they are all found in the Central Fort Myers redevelopment district!

As the sports hub of Fort Myers, Central Fort Myers is one of the most fun parts of the city for active families and individuals. It all began in 1990 with the City of Palms Park—a major league baseball spring training stadium—where baseball fans can enjoy their favorite team under Florida’s sunny skies in an escape from the end of a cold northern winter. Fort Myers Skatium & Recreation Center offers ice skating, exercise equipment, classes, and indoor and youth sports. Families with young children enjoy the charming, tree-covered Yawkey Park playground for relaxing moments on swings, slides, and inside the gazebo-pavilion. A small portion of the Central district is residential.

The Central Fort Myers district was created in 1990 to brighten up the neighborhood and to assemble land to build the City of Palms Park. Most of the stadium’s land assembly was soon finished. It is located just south of the Downtown core between Victoria Street and Willard Street, and between a block east of U.S. 41 and Fowler Street.

Redevelopment Plan

The Central Fort Myers redevelopment district was created in 1990 to eliminate blight and to assemble land to construct the Red Sox spring training stadium, City of Palms Park. A significant amount of the stadium’s land assembly was completed a short time later. Since the stadium and surrounding grass parking lots, adjacent State of Florida Regional Service Center parking garage, Skatium and Skate (board) Park are publicly owned and not on the tax rolls, this district did not generate tax increment revenue for most of its life.
