FORT MYERS, FL (February 13, 2017) – Professional and amateur golfers alike will compete in the Yuengling Open at the Fort Myers Country Club on Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5. The Yuengling Open is the longest running golf event in the region. This will be the 55th year for the tournament, formerly known as the Coors Light Open.
Defending champion Derek Gillespie will be among the 144 players vying for the Yuengling Open title. Other players include past winners Tommy Tolles and George McNeill, both natives to the Fort Myers area. Fort Myers resident Nolan Henke, along with other PGA tour notables Tim Herron, Lonnie Nielsen, and Derek Lamely, a former FGCU Eagle, will also compete in the 2017 field.
Tolles holds the two-round tournament record of 124 (61-63), set in 2001. His single-round 61 is also a tournament record, which he shares with Nielsen and Steve Scott.
Rich Lamb, director of golf for the City of Fort Myers, says the tournament provides a unique opportunity for spectators.
“It’s probably the only tournament in the country with a field of our quality where you can walk right along with the players,” says Lamb. “There are no ropes, so you can listen to them, and stand just a few feet away as they choose their clubs and play. It’s really something special.”
Admission and parking are free for spectators.
Celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2017, the Fort Myers Country Club is one of the oldest golf facilities on the west coast of Florida. The par-70 course was renovated in 2014. Since its renovation, “The Fort” has been named the Best Public Golf Course in Southwest Florida for two consecutive years by readers of Gulfshore Business magazine.
“The course is getting nicer all the time,” adds Lamb. “It was brand new two years ago, and it’s still maturing. Players come back after being away for six months and are excited that it’s even better than it was the time before.”
The Fort Myers Country Club is located at 3591 McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers. Pairings and tee times for the Yuengling Open will be available on the Fort Myers Country Club website.
