(Fort Myers, FL – June 20, 2017)-- For the 26th consecutive year, the City of Fort Myers has earned the “Distinguished Budget Presentation Award” from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). The honor was presented for the city’s 2017 fiscal year budget (period beginning October 2016). The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award reflects the City’s commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.
In order to receive the GFOA award, government entities must satisfy nationally-recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. An entity’s budget is required to serve as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device.
“Our budget team does an excellent job every year,” says the City of Fort Myers’ Director of Financial Services Maria Joyner. “It’s great that they can receive recognition for their hard work.”
In addition to receiving the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, the GFOA also endowed the City’s budget manager and staff with a Special Performance Measure Recognition. To accomplish this, the budget document must provide objective measures of progress toward accomplishing the government’s mission as well as goals and objectives for specific units and programs. The City of Fort Myers’ budget received outstanding ratings from the GFOA reviewers in this area.
