1. Does the City Attorney’s Office provide free legal advice to citizens?

No.  The City Attorney cannot give advice in any private legal matter.  Private legal matters must be handled by a private attorney.  The City Attorney’s Office represents the Mayor, the City Council and the City’s Advisory Boards.  If you need help locating an attorney, you may contact the Florida Bar and access their Lawyer Referral Service for consumers at www.floridabar.org or via phone – 1-800-342-8011, Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 5:30 p.m.  

2. I have received a notice of violation from an officer in the Code Enforcement Dept. How may I reach the Officer?

3. How can I get a copy of a city ordinance?

The City’s code of ordinances is available on the Municipal Code Corporation website at www.municode.com.  Additionally, you may contact the Clerk’s Office at City Public Records: 239-321-7042 or via Online

4. What is a Public Record?

“Public records” are all documents, papers, letters, maps, books, tapes, photograms, films, sound recordings, data processing software or other material, regardless of the physical form, characteristics or means of transmission, made or received pursuant to law or ordinance or in connection with the transaction of official business by any agency.  

5. What type of cases does the City Attorney’s Office handle?

The City Attorney does not have the honor of politically representing the community because while he or she must be ratified by the City Council, he or she is not elected by the people.  The City Attorney must refrain from getting involved with or formulating political agendas by choosing sides in political debates, irrespective of his or her opinion.
